4 Biggest Mistakes I Made as a Freelance Transcriber Starting Out

No new freelancer is perfect - not me, and maybe, not you too. However if we are smart, we learn from our mistakes.  If we are smarter, we learn from others' mistakes.

A few years ago (3 years ago?) I had the idea of freelancing as a transcriber.  I know I'm good at what I do and love doing what I do - transcribing.

I wanted, and still do, the opportunity to work closely with clients and build relationships with them, which is missing when clients outsource to transcription companies. 

I also look at freelancing as the next step in my career. Ten-fifteen years down the line I want a transcription business of my own that focuses on providing personalized service to every customer.

However, these four mistakes effectively hijacked my freelance career at take-off!

Starting Afresh (When You Are Experienced)

Starting afresh when you are already experienced in a certain industry is scary and not everybody is comfortable with it.

That's what I'm doing when I left my previous company and joined KPMG.

My previous company is a transcription company, and KPMG is not.  KPMG is basically an audit firm.  Though not just another audit firm; it's one of the Big Four along with PWC, Deloitte and Ernst & Young.

Starting afresh in a new industry is what I'm doing here.

Having been very comfortably settled within the transcription industry, I've even started doing freelance work from home.  I know what to do and what to expect in my line of work - whether in my workplace or at home, working alone.  There are no surprises in terms of delivering quality work.

However, I still chose to start afresh.

I want to have the experience of working beyond and outside of transcription.  I know there will be a steep learning curve required of me and hard work the only way to prove myself over again.

But, I love the challenge - the challenge of learning new skills and discovering hidden talents I have.

I don't want to be comfortably settled and wondering if 'this is it'.

I want to break free of the narrow-mindedness that comes with staying too long at one place.  Life is all about exploring new venues and opening up your mind to possibilities.

Starting afresh gives you a beginner's perspective on life.  Learning the baby steps all over again keeps you on your toe and also young.

I look forward to surprising myself, meeting and ever exceeding expectations.  That's what's so attractive about starting all over again.
