Dictation or audio dictation is the process of dictating material on to an audio recorder for transcription.

A dictation machine is a device used to record speech for transcription.

A dictation is often done by an author who wants his dictation transcribed, formatted and edited for use.  A dictation can be a message in the form of letters, memos, or even reports.

A dictation can be a recording of conversation or conference calls of some import.

These days digital dictations in mp3 formats are sent across the internet for transcription.
